I have read other books by Gillian Flynn. You have probably read them and seen the movie too, Gone Girl. So, this book seemed like a good candidate to read.
All I can say is the author must be thoroughly disturbed! The story is written from first person perspective of Camille. She is a reporter from Chicago who is sent to the little town in Mississipi where she grew up to report on murders of two little girls. A serial killer seems to be on the loose who could be an outsider, but more likely a local. The book is written in first person who hates herself and apparently was prone to self-cutting while growing up, lost a sister to some sickness, and has a horrible relationship with her mother. I can understand that the people who write novels are imaginative and they do research to write the story and create characters. But, how can you create such a disturbed character that is in this story unless one has some first-person experience? Shock value?
Anyway, most of the text is about the disturbed character and not so much about the solving of the murders or police procedures or anything like that. I kept reading and finished the book because I had already invested so much time in it. Why would anyone want to read this? What would you gain by reading this except kill some time?
Do yourself a favor. Save your time and sanity for something else. Pick up a Dr. Seuss instead.
